Over the years Veerni has taught many women in rural areas sewing and embroidery skills with the aim to help them earn some money. Currently the team is active in Keru, a small village off the Jaisalmer Highway. Most women in this poor development are completely dependent on the men but are keen to learn new skills so they can generate some income.
Training courses of 8 to 12 weeks are conducted, teaching sewing, embroidery and patch work. Graduates can continue in advanced classes, specializing in one of the skills. The team makes sure that the items produced are of high quality and can be sold locally and in Jodhpur.
In addition the participants will be taught practical bookkeeping skills. Regular lectures take place covering social and health topics. Illiterate women can participate in basic literacy classes.
The aim of the program is economic empowerment by teaching the village women new skills. In addition, the program should reach a level of self-sufficiency. Veerni's goal is to generate income for the participants through sales at local retail outlets.
